My research focuses on the demography and sociology of inequality within sub-Saharan Africa. This work follows two directions (1) assessing the buffering from informal institutions such as child fosterage and (2) examining the disequalizing influences of demographic change and development projects. My field work will cover several countries, including participation in a multi-disciplinary project in Zambia where I use the capability approach to explore change in wellbeing and inequality associated with rapid economic growth in rural communities.

 Cameron Keys
Research Technician, Consortium for Science, Policy, & Outcomes, United States
I am currently contracted to perform socio-technical integration research (STIR), an NSF-funded program to bring ethicists and ethnographers into scientific laboratories. I am currently embedded in a lab at the National Institute for Materials Science in Tsukuba, Japan. The laboratory personnel are all Hindus from rural India who care deeply about applying their research to the improvement of social systems in India and elsewhere. We are working to apply Sen and Nussbaum's capabilities approaches to thinking about the commercialization of research and the development of interdisciplinary international research centers across India in the coming years. I have a professional science master's (PSM) degree in Science & Technology Policy (December 2012) from the Consortium for Science, Policy, & Outcomes at Arizona State University. Master's Thesis -- "Social Business Model Innovation: An Emerging Science and Technology Policy Pathway?" Committee: Dr. Erik Fisher, Dr. David Guston, Dr. Clark Miller, and G. Pascal Zachary. My thesis combined the work of Muhammad Yunus, Sheila Jasanoff, and Clayton Christensen with analyses of regional economic developments in the United States to explore the possibility of implementing a research programme in "social business model innovation" in the New American University.
