Kantian Viewpoints to Amarty Sen's Idea of the Reasoned Scrutinity of Thinking

In this paper, I discuss Amartya Sen’s idea of the so-called reasoned scrutinity of thinking, which is essential to his concept of freedom. I especially show how Kant’s philosophy helps us to understand the preconditions of the reasoned scrutinity of thinking. In this respect, it is also interesting to note how nicely Kant’s account of aesthetic judgments fits to the basic features of the reasoned scrutinity of thinking. By considering the Kantian basis of Sen’s thinking, I aim to expand the historical-philosophical basis of the capability approach. While the connection of Sen’s thinking to Aristoteles has readily been acknowledged (especially in the works of Martha Nussbaum), the Kantian connection has remained un-sufficiently recognized.

This working paper proposes a new methodology for multidimensional poverty measurement consisting of: (i) an identification method that extends the traditional intersection and union approaches, and (ii) a class of poverty measures that satisfies a range of desirable properties including decomposability. The identification step makes use of two forms of cutoffs: first, a cutoff within each dimension to determine whether a person is deprived in that dimension; second, a cutoff across dimensions that identifies the poor by counting the number of dimensions in which a person is deprived. The aggregation step employs the FGT measures, appropriately adjusted to account for multidimensionality. The identification method is particularly well suited for use with ordinal data, as is the first of our measures, the adjusted headcount ratio. The paper also provides illustrative examples from Indonesia and the US to show how this methodology might be used in practice.

This paper argues that our acting against the threats of climate change ought to be guided by universal values. To conceptualise universal values I use Nussbaum's version of the capability-approach. Any cristisim is highly appreciated!
